Canfranc new railway station

The new Canfranc passenger station functionally replaces the emblematic international station and is developed inside the Spanish and French hangars, originally intended for the exchange of goods.

The architectural proposal has its origin in the recognition of the quality of the existing space; an approach that enhances the structural system of porticoes, making the metal framework the protagonist of the intervention. The enclosure of the new station is formalized in a system of articulated boxes, alternating opaque boxes in the restricted use areas and a large transparent box in the public use area. The project preview was carried out by a group of professors and students from San Jorge University.

Innovation and sustainability

This project is characterized, among other things, by its energy efficiency, mainly with the improvement of the envelope characteristics. EnerPHit certification has been used in the project, which is based on applying Passivhaus criteria to the rehabilitation.

Goals

The project for the new Canfranc passenger station aims to achieve three objectives proposed by the Government of Aragon. On the one hand, to help improve cross-border communications between Spain and the rest of the countries of the European Union. Secondly, to position Aragon as a leading land logistics platform in Europe, which will give a strong economic boost to the community. Finally, to enhance the Aragonese Pyrenees and continue to create employment and wealth in the area.

Environment

The Canfranc International Station has been, since its construction, a point of reference in the Aragonese Pyrenees, among other things, due to its location in a territory surrounded by nature and diverse geographical features. This, together with its proximity to the French border, makes it a unique place. For this reason, the construction of the new passenger station has maintained an aesthetic in keeping with the environment itself and the old station to integrate into the natural and historical essence of the enclave.
